live at duel (2019)

From the liner notes:

Love Unfold The Sun dates its provenance back to 2003, as an expansion of the MSD Trio.

I ran across some LUTS archive recordings from 2003 and 2004, captured – then as on this release — by Stephen Schmidt, who has been chronicling shows of live improvised music and jazz around the globe for years (and luckily for us is based in Santa Fe).

Shocked by how strong the playing was – the telepathy, the listening, the range of textures and ideas – I asked Dave and Dan if they’d like to reconvene this project. They were as excited as I was, and we invited Ross to join on bass, making this group a tight and familiar circle: the four of us have played together in various combinations for various groups over the years, but not yet in this specific formation on this material.

Mr. Schmidt was also intrigued to hear about this, and offered to multitrack the first two shows — and here it is.

Chemistry and interplay abound from everyone on these performances, honed and tempered and made wiser by time. But this is no nostalgic rehash: new tunes mix with fresh takes on initial repertoire, and we’re excited for what lies ahead.

 reviews:

“The open improvisations reveal an acute sensitivity ,…, ushering the quartet into one bracing and surprising exploration after another.” Mel Minter, Musically Speaking, April 2019

“[a] kind of post-Milesian electricity of the Davis ’70s bands with a Mid-Eastern sensibility and plenty of freedom. Dill has his own way around the guitar and it has been influenced quite naturally by his own oud work. Everybody gets with it here. It is a good go of things, I would say!” Grego Applegate Edwards, https://gapplegateguitar.blogspot.com, May 2019
